SSA Field Offices Reopen to the Public
After being closed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SSA reopened the majority of its field offices to restore in-person services to the public on April 7, 2022. Appointments are not required at most offices, but SSA recommends people make them to avoid delays and longer wait times. Certain field offices remain closed to the public and continue to only offer assistance via telephone, while others are only offering in-person services to those with appointments. These field offices are listed online at www.ssa.gov/agency/emergency/.
SSA has taken several steps to make reopening as efficient as possible, including sending some staff from headquarters to field offices and temporarily rehiring retired field office staff, but problems are very likely to occur. We encourage representatives to communicate with your Regional Communications Director (RCD) (www.ssa.gov/agency/rcds.html) if you have difficulties at field offices that cannot be resolved through the normal channels (please do not email personally identifiable information like SSNs and your clients’ full names). NOSSCR also remains eager to learn about your experiences as field offices reopen and ask that members complete this short form to share feedback. We will use your stories in our advocacy to get SSA adequate administrative funding so the agency can have the staffing and systems it needs to provide good customer service.
